Assign participation grades for in-class participation with Vevox

If you are interested in assigning participation grades for in-class participation with polling, you will need to link your Vevox sessions to your course in myCourses. Importantly, you will have to do this before you run your polling questions in class. After you run your polling questions, you will be able to push the participation grades into the myCourses Grades tool.

Before your class

You must do the following steps before you run your polling questions in class.

  1. Create your polling questions

  2. You will need to link the Vevox activity (e.g. lecture 1) to your course in myCourses. Access your course, go to the Content tool and create a unit/folder (e.g. Polling).

  3. Click Add Existing > Vevox. Your Vevox sessions appear.

  1. Select your Vevox session name.

  2. Select Live polling

  1. From the Participation identification window, select Identified, Participation (and enter the number of points) and Manual (under LTI score syncing).

Identified: Allows for grades pass back from Vevox to the Grades tool (myCourses)

Participation: This will create a column in the gradebook and students will be graded on the number of questions that they provide an answer for, regardless of whether they answered correctly. This option can be used for any type of questions you have (e.g. correct answer questions or opinion-based questions that do not have a correct response). Participation scoring provides a way to track whether and to what extent students have been engaging and participating with the Vevox activity.

The Combined combined scoring option will create one single column in the gradebook with a combined (correct answer and participation) score. You can move the slider to adjust what proportion of the score should be weighted towards participation and answering correctly.

Manual: Allows to manually sync the scores to the Grades tool (myCourses)

  1. Click Done.

  2. You must click on the Vevox activity link you just added. It is essential to click on the Vevox activity link that you just added before students try to join the session. When you click on the link, you should see a screen that says "Open in new tab." Once you see this screen, no further action is required. Clicking this link triggers the system to send course enrollment data to Vevox. This ensure students can be properly authenticated when they access the polling session.

Note: If you go to Grades, you will notice that a grade item has been created. You may wish to hide the grade item.

Important: If you will be giving participation grades for every class/lecture, you will need to link each Vevox session to your course.

During your class

  1. Run your polling questions

After your class

  1. Access Vevox via the Vevox dashboard

  2. Select your session

  3. Click Data

  4. Click LTI Sync to push participation grades into the myCourses Grades tool
