Run a Polling @ McGill event from an internet browser

Two ways exist for running a Polling @ McGill event using Slido from an internet browser: Present mode and Admin mode.

Internet browsers compatible with Slido

To ensure that Slido runs as intended, you should use the following internet browsers:

Desktop (PC and Mac)

Mobile (iOS and Android)

  • Safari

  • Firefox

  • Microsoft Edge

  • Safari

To check if the version of internet browser you are using is supported, visit internet browser versions no longer compatible with Slido.

Run a session using Present mode

The Present mode in Slido allows you to run an event while showing the results to your students when sharing your screen. It has a control panel that allows easy poll management without the need for a secondary screen or device.

To use Present mode:

  1. Log into Slido by clicking on the Log in button in the top-right section of the page. Select Log in with Webex, and enter your McGill credentials.

  2. Select the event you would like to run and click on the Present button in the top-right corner of your window. A new tab with the Slido event code and QR code will open. You can share the screen with your students and ask them to join the event.

  3. To start the poll, hover over the Present mode slide. A control panel will appear. Click on the Play button to run the first question.

  • Create new poll

    : You can create a new question while running the event. The newly created question will be added at the end of the question list.
    You can also find simple pre-defined questions by hovering on the lightning bolt button next to each question type. The pre-defined question will be launched as soon as you click on the lightning bolt button .

  • Control polls : This section of the control panel allows you to move between questions, select a specific question to launch, lock voting, and show the results to your students.

  • Control Q&A: You can view and manage students’ questions.

  • Gear icon options

    : You have the option to copy the event link, disable Q&A, and go to Admin mode (exit Present mode).

Run a session using Admin mode

To use Admin mode:

  1. Log into Slido by clicking on the Log in button in the top-right section of the page. Select Log in with Webex, and enter your McGill credentials.

  2. Select the event you would like to run to open Admin mode.

    Before you run any questions, make sure you have shared the event with your students.

  3. In the Live polls tab, hover over the question you would like to run and click on the

    (Play) button to start the poll and the
    (Stop) button to end it.
    You can check what the students view using the Participant mode tab located on the left side of the page.

Options in Admin mode

Live polls

The Live polls tab is divided into two panels.

  • The List panel (left) has the list of polls that have been previously created. When you hover over a question, a control menu appears:

Reorganize your polls by dragging and dropping them in the desired order.

Lock the question to stop receiving answers.

Hide or show results to your students.

Start or end a poll.

Question settings: Edit or duplicate the question, reset results, delete, etc.

  • The Live panel (right) will display the results as students start responding to the live polls. 

Audience Q&A

The Audience Q&A tab is divided into two panels.

  1. The For review panel (left) shows questions submitted by students that are pending approval. This panel is only active when moderation is turned on. The moderation feature gives you the opportunity to approve or dismiss the questions submitted by your students before posting them to the whole class.

Moderator’s announcement: Type a message that will appear as a pop-up in the Q&A tab of students’ screens. This feature can be used even if the moderation is tuned off.

Q&A settings: Activate the moderation feature, and open or close Q&A questions.

  1. The Live view and the Archive of the Q&A questions posted by the class appear in the panel on the right. 

    If the moderation feature is turned on, the questions must first be approved in the For review panel before they appear in the Live view.

    The Live view shows the questions submitted by the students that are visible to the whole class.

Sort and filter questions by popular, recent, oldest, starred, or labelled.

When you hover over a question in the Live view, the following options appear:

Star a question: Use this feature to bookmark questions. The stars cannot be seen by students. 

Highlight question: Use this feature to highlight questions, which will then appear at the top of the Q&A list for both you and the students.

Mark as answered: Use this feature to remove questions from the Live view and send them to the Archive. You can always restore questions.

Q&A question settings: Use this feature to edit, delete, archive, reply, or add labels to the selected Q&A question.

The Archive shows the questions that have been addressed or manually archived. These questions are not visible to students.

Export the event summary report and all the data obtained from the session (.xls or .pdf format).

Sort and filter questions by popular, recent, oldest, starred, or labelled.

When you hover over a question in the Archive, the following options appear:

Restore question: Restore archived questions to the Live view to make them visible to students.

Q&A question settings: Edit, delete, archive, reply privately to the student, or add labels to the selected Q&A question.

Ideas

  • This feature allows you to collect ideas from students in brainstorming sessions. You can enable or disable downvotes, replies, anonymous ideas, and limit the characters per post.

  • Visit Use the Ideas (beta) feature in Slido for more information.

The Ideas feature is not automatically enabled. To activate it, go to the Features tab in the Slido event settings.

Agenda

  • This feature allows you to share a simple schedule for your event that is visible to the students.

  • Visit Add the agenda into your event for more information.
