Edit the navigation bar (Navbar) in myCourses
The navigation bar (Navbar)
The navigation bar (Navbar) is located at the top of the Course home page and links to various tools in myCourses. Students can only access tools that appear in the Navigation Bar. This is the default Navigation Bar in new courses:
You can customize the Navigation Bar so that it links to tools relevant to your course, such as Content, Discussions, Assignments, and Grades. Tools like Course Admin and Classlist are only visible to instructors or others with permission (e.g., teaching assistants).
Change the current navigation bar to another existing version
On the Course home page, select Course admin in the top right corner of the screen.
Select Navigation & themes. On the page that appears, you will see a list of available Navigation Bars.
Under Active Navbar, select the Navigation Bar you want to use.
Click Apply.
You should now see the selected navigation bar at the top of your Course home page.
Create a customized navigation bar
On the main Navigation Bar page, the default options appear in black. You cannot modify these default Navigation Bars. If you want to create a customized Navigation Bar, rather than start from scratch, it is efficient to Copy an existing one and then add or remove links as needed.
Access the main Navigation Bar page by selecting Course admin > Navigation & themes.
Click the arrow beside an existing Navigation Bar and select Copy.
A copy of the navigation bar will be automatically created.
Click on the name of the copy (e.g., “Course Default - Copy”) to modify it.
(Optional) Add a new Name or Description to the Navigation Bar.
Under Links, click Add links.
In the pop-up window that appears, select the checkbox beside each tool you want to add to your navigation bar; then, click Add.
Drag and drop links to reorganize them on your Navigation Bar.
To remove links to tools you are not using in your course, hover your mouse over the link, and click the X in the top right.
Click Save and close.
Select your new Navigation Bar from the Active Navbar drop-down list at the top of the main Navigation Bar page, and click Apply to activate it.
If you need to add or remove links in the future, you can go back and edit this new Navigation Bar.
The minibar
The minibar is a navigation bar across the top of myCourses that remains consistent and cannot be customized. Use the minibar to switch between courses, access your course settings and profile information, manage alerts and subscriptions, and return to the myCourses landing page.
