Create Self Assessments in myCourses

Self Assessments work similarly to Quizzes. However, they are completely anonymous, feedback for questions is immediate, and attempts are not submitted to the instructor. Student responses are not graded and participation is not tracked. Self assessments may be useful for students to practice material and measure their progress without having to worry about being graded or tracked. The Self Assessment tool in myCourses allows you to set up self assessments that will provide students with immediate, ungraded feedback on their understanding of course content.

In order for your student to access the Self Assessments tool, you must add the Self Assessments link to your navigation bar. See Edit the navigation bar (Navbar) in myCourses for instructions on how to do this.

Create a self assessment

  1. Click the Self Assessments link on your navigation bar.

  2. Click New Self Assessment.

  3. Enter a Name for the self assessment.

  4. Select an existing category from the Category drop-down list or click the [add category] link to create a new self assessment category. Categories are useful for organizing self assessments in your list by grouping them according to the topic or date.

  5. Select the checkbox beside allow hints to allow your students to access hints to questions on the self assessment. See Add hints and feedback to questions in myCourses for more information.

  6. Click Expand page header/footer to show two boxes for adding a page header or footer to your self assessment:

    • Beside Page Header, click the circle beside on and type your description in the textbox to add instructions or information at the top of the self assessment.

    • Beside Page Footer, click the circle beside on and type your description in the textbox to add a message at the bottom of the self assessment.

Page Header and Page Footer must be set to on in order for students to see them. You can set these messages to off at any time to hide them from students.

  7. Click Save.

  8. Click Add/Edit Questions to add new questions or to import existing questions.

You can return to this edit page at any time by going to the main Self Assessments page and clicking on the name of the self assessment you want to edit.

While this resource is accessible worldwide, McGill University is on land which has served and continues to serve as a site of meeting and exchange amongst Indigenous peoples, including the Haudenosaunee and Anishinabeg nations. Teaching and Learning Services acknowledges and thanks the diverse Indigenous peoples whose footsteps mark this territory on which peoples of the world now gather. This land acknowledgment is shared as a starting point to provide context for further learning and action.
