Overview of questions for Quizzes, Surveys and Self Assessments in myCourses
Questions in myCourses can be used within three different tools: Quizzes, Surveys, and Self Assessments. You can create different types of questions (e.g., multiple choice, true/false) either within the Question Library for the course or from the Add/Edit Questions page for an individual quiz, survey, or self assessment.
Access the Question Library
It is recommended that you create questions in the Question Library so that you can manage all questions for your course in one location. Once you have created the questions, you must import them into the Add/Edit Questions page of a quiz, survey, or self assessment.
On the Course Home page, click Quizzes, Surveys, or Self Assessments on your Navigation Bar. If none of these links is available, see Edit the navigation bar in myCourses for instructions on how to add links to your Navigation Bar.
Click Question Library at the top of the page.
Access the Add/Edit questions page for an individual Quiz, Survey, or Self Assessment
You can create questions within an individual quiz, survey, or self assessment.
On the main Quizzes, Surveys, or Self Assessments page, select the name of the quiz, survey, or self assessment you want to add questions to.
Click Add/Edit Questions.
Steps to create a question
Several question types are available, but the steps and options for creating them are the same.
On the main Quizzes, Surveys, or Self Assessments page, select the name of the quiz, survey, or self assessment to which you want to add questions.
Select New (Question Library) or Add > New Question (Add/Edit Questions page) and select a question type from the drop-down menu.
Enter the number of Points the question will be worth.
Enter the Question Text.
Enter your answer options according to the Question Type you selected. See below for more information.
For Question Library or Quizzes Only: Select your Grading options and identify a correct answer. If applicable, enter 100 in the Weight (%) field to identify the correct answer.
Click Save.
When creating a question, you can add the following optional information:
Title: Enter a title that will appear in the list on the Add/Edit Questions page and Question Library pages. If you don’t enter a title, the Question Text will be displayed.
Difficulty: Select a value from 1 to 5. This selection is used for instructors to classify questions and is not visible to students.
Image: Click Add a File to add an image that students will see below the question.
Description: Enter a description that will appear below the image you added.
Question Hints and Feedback: See Add hints and feedback to questions for more information. Feedback is required for questions in Self Assessments because they cannot be submitted or graded.
For Quizzes, you can align questions to previously created learning outcomes. In the quiz, under the Questions section, select the question you want to align by clicking the checkbox left to the question. Then, select More Actions located under the Questions section and click Align to Outcomes. A new window will appear with a list of the learning outcomes available in the course. Select the desired outcome and Save.
Edit a question
If you are editing a question within a quiz that students have already attempted, see Overview of questions for Quizzes, Surveys and Self Assessments in myCourses for information on how to fix your error and update the question scores after the quiz has been accessed.
If a question was already updated or hasn’t yet been attempted by any students, you can edit the question without causing scoring issues.
On the Add/Edit Questions page, select a question to edit it.
In the Question Library, click the arrow beside a question and select Edit.
Make your changes.
Click Save.
If the question is used in more than one location (e.g., multiple quizzes and/or saved in the Question Library), you will be taken to the Question In Use page to confirm which copies of the questions will be affected by the edit. Select all checkboxes and click Save.
If you don’t select all questions on this page, the links among the questions will be broken and you will have multiple versions of the same question.
Bulk edit question values
You can edit the Points, Difficulty, Bonus, and Mandatory settings from the Properties tab of a quiz. Bulk edit questions is is the only way you can update the Difficulty setting, which is used for instructors to classify questions and is not visible to students.
On the main Quizzes page, select the quiz you want to edit values for.
Under Quiz Questions, click Edit Values.
Enter or select new Points, Difficulty, Bonus, and/or Mandatory values.
Click Save.
If you edit question values after the quiz has been taken, your modifications won’t affect attempts in progress or already submitted quizzes, but it may cause scoring issues.
Manage questions in large quizzes
To facilitate the management and reordering of questions you can now use the Load More button on the initial page load if a quiz has more than 200 questions, sections, and question pools.
Also, you can select multiple items and use drag and drop to rearrange the question list.
