Manage grade items in myCourses
You can edit your grade items to customize from the default settings in myCourses.
Preview a student’s view of the Grades tool
The Preview option allows you to see what a student sees when they click Grades on their Navigation Bar.
On the Enter Grades page, click the name of a student.
Click the arrow beside the student’s name at the top of the page and select Preview. A pop-up window will appear that shows the selected student’s view of Grades.
Hide and release grades
By default, grades for all grade items will be visible to students immediately after you enter them. You can change the options on the Restrictions tab of an item to hide grades or release them on a specific date. If you hide a grade category, all items in that category will also be hidden.
On the Enter Grades page, click the arrow beside the name of an item and select Edit.
Or
On the Manage Grades page, click on the name of an item.
Click the Restrictions tab.
Under Visibility, select one of the following options:
Grade item is always visible: Allows students to see their grades for this item immediately after you enter them.
Hide this grade item: Prevents students from seeing their grades for this item unless the item is associated with an assignment or quiz. To make sure assignment and quiz scores are hidden from students, see Manage assignments and Release quiz answers to students respectively.
Grade item is visible for a specific date range: Allows you to set a date or date range when students will be able to see their grades for this item. Select one or more of the following options:
Has Start Date: Select a date when grades will be released to students.
Has End Date: Select a date to hide grades from students.
Display in Calendar: Show any start and/or end dates on the course calendar, to let your students know when grades will be available to them.
Under Release Conditions, click Create and Attach to set various conditions that students must fulfill to view grades. See Set up release conditions for more information.
The Release Conditions set for in an assignment are automatically shared to the corresponding grade item. This ensures that the same set of rules apply for both, the Grade item and the assignment.
- If the Grade item had Release Conditions before being associated to the desired assignment, the previously existing Release Conditions on the Grade item will be removed.
Click Save and Close.

Reorder Grade Items
On the Manage Grades page, click More Actions > Reorder.
Select the order of items and categories from the drop-down lists.
Click Save.
Reordering items in the list on the Manage Grades page also affects the order of columns on the Enter Grades page.
Delete Grade Items
On the Manage Grades page, click More Actions > Delete.
Select the checkbox beside each item or category you want to delete.
Checkboxes for grade items that are associated with an assignment, discussion topic, or quiz will be greyed out. See the next heading below for details.
Click Delete.
In the pop-up window that appears, click Delete.
Delete items associated with an assignment, discussion topic, or quiz
For items that are tied to another course object, you must remove the association before you can delete the item.
On the Manage Grades page, click the information icon in the Association column for the item to find out which course object it is associated with.
On the Assignments, Discussions, or Quizzes page, access the Edit page for the associated object.
(Discussions only) Click the Assessment tab,
From the Grade Item drop-down list, select None.
Click Save.
Return to the Manage Grades page and delete the grade item.
Restore Grade Items
You can access the Event Log to restore any items you deleted.
On the Enter Grades or Manage Grades page, click More Actions at the top of the page and select Event Log.
Click Restore beside any deleted grade item in the list. This will also restore any grades that were entered for the item.
If the restored item has the same name as an existing item in your grade book, a pop-up window will appear, in which you must enter a new name for the restored item and click Restore.
