Zoom breakout rooms for students
This article provides tips for your students on using breakout rooms.
Join a breakout room
Students will receive a notification to join your breakout room when you or the session host (e.g., co-instructor, TA) initiates the breakout rooms function. They should select Join Breakout Room in the notification to enter the room.
Use Zoom functions in a breakout room
While in a breakout room, students have access to the same controls as in the main session (e.g., unmuting audio, enabling video, and sharing their screen).
If students have questions or need assistance, they can invite the host(s) into their Breakout Room by clicking the Ask for Help button.
If you have enabled recordings and given students permission to record, they can record their Breakout Room by clicking the Record button in their session controls. However, they should ask their fellow students if they consent to the recording in advance.
Leave a breakout room
When you end any breakout rooms, students will receive a notification pop-up notification stating that the room will close in 60 seconds. They can leave in one of two ways:
Select Leave Breakout Room to leave and return to the main session. Students also have the option of leaving the meeting entirely, though this may cause an issue if they try to rejoin the meeting.
Allow the timer to countdown to zero and be automatically brought back to the main session.
