Create matching and ordering questions in myCourses

Matching questions

Matching questions allow students to match up answers from two columns. This type of question may be useful for testing course vocabulary on a quiz or for creating associations on a survey.

  1. In the Question Text field, enter your written response question details.

  2. Select a Grading system:

    • Equally weighted: Gives a student points for each correct answer.

    • All or nothing: Gives a student zero if they select one incorrect answer.

    • Right minus wrong: Gives a student points for selecting correct answers, but subtracts points for selecting an incorrect answer.

  3. Click Add Choice to add more choices for matching.

  4. In the Choices textboxes, enter the choices that the student will see in a column on the right.

  5. Click Add Match to add matches. These will appear to students in a column on the left.

  6. Enter the text for your matches in the Matches textboxes.

  7. Select the number from the drop-down list under Correct Choice to indicate which Choice from the section above is correct for that Match.

This is how a matching question with the above settings would appear on a quiz:

Students must select the Choice numbers from the drop-down list beside each Match on the left. The order of the Matches will be randomized for each student.

Ordering questions

Ordering questions require students to put items in a certain order. This question type might be useful for asking students to arrange events on a quiz chronologically or for asking respondents to rank items on a survey.

  3. Click Add Item to add as many items as you want for ordering.

  4. Enter the text for the items to be ordered in the Value column.

  5. Select numbers from the drop-down lists in the Correct Order column to indicate the order students should place the items in.

This is how an ordering question with the above settings may appear on a quiz:

Students must select the numbers indicating the correct order from the drop-down lists on the left. The order of the items will be randomized for each student.
