Issue awards to recognize student accomplishments in myCourses

You can use the Awards tool to issue merit-based awards to students in myCourses. For example, you can manually assign badges or certificates to students or grant these awards based on release conditions.

The Awards tool is not on the default myCourses Navigation Bar, so you will need to add the link. See the Edit the Navigation Bar (Navbar) in myCourses article for more information.

Badges and certificates can be issued to students based on a number of different criteria, such as viewing all content topics or completing a quiz. However, these awards do not contribute to a student's grade and they are not connected to the Grades tool.

Students can export their earned awards in a standards-compliant format. Exporting a digital credential downloads badges or certificates as a .png file with the award data embedded in the image.

Badges can be used to mark important accomplishments in a class. For example, you can create a badge that will be awarded when students post in fifteen discussion threads, when they attend ten consecutive lectures, or when they achieve over 80% on a quiz. This positive reinforcement may help to encourage students during the term.

Certificates (which can include a printable .pdf file) are typically presented at the end of a course or program. Certificates can also be given throughout a course to mark significant milestones, like passing a practical exam.

While this resource is accessible worldwide, McGill University is on land which has served and continues to serve as a site of meeting and exchange amongst Indigenous peoples, including the Haudenosaunee and Anishinabeg nations. Teaching and Learning Services acknowledges and thanks the diverse Indigenous peoples whose footsteps mark this territory on which peoples of the world now gather. This land acknowledgment is shared as a starting point to provide context for further learning and action.
