Create written response questions in myCourses

Written Response questions used to be known as "Long Display Questions". Written Response questions display a textbox to allow students to write detailed answers to questions. This question type may be useful for collecting comments on surveys or giving short essay questions on quizzes. For Quizzes, this question type can't be auto-graded and must be graded manually.

  1. Create a new quiz or select an existing quiz to add a Written Response question. See Overview of grades in myCourses for more information.

  2. In the Question Text field, enter your Written Response question details.

    • If you want students to be able to format their answer, select Enable HTML Editor for student responses check box.

    • If you want students to be able to insert images and attachments, select Enable inserted images and attachments.

  3. In the Points field, enter the points students will receive for answering the entire question correctly.

  4. (Optional) From the Options drop-down list, do the following:

    1. Add Feedback: To add feedback for the answer.

    2. Add Hint: To add a hint to the question.

    3. Add Short Description: Text entered in this box will appear in the answer box for students before they begin their answer, such as an introductory phrase to help guide them.

    4. Add Answer Key: To add an answer key to assist Teaching Assistants or Graders in their marking. Students can't see this text.

    5. Add Custom Response Box Size: To add a custom size to the response box.
