Create assessments in Crowdmark

In this article:

Types of assessments

Crowdmark allows you to create two types of assessments: Assigned and Administered.

Type of Assessment

Use

Notes

Assigned

Online

  • Students upload their own exams.

  • The grading platform remains the same, no matter the type of exam used.

  • Assigned assessments are useful for students located in different time zones.

Administered

In-person

  • Crowdmark generates a .PDF with an individual QR code for each student.

  • The QR code needs to be scanned and uploaded to grade the exam.

To help you decide which assessment type to use, read more on the Crowdmark website

Create an assigned assessment

  1. Sign in to the Crowdmark portal with your McGill username and password.

  2. Select Create an Assessment. Enter an assessment name, the students involved (typically “All enrolled students") and the instructional team (if required). Click Save.

  3. You will be prompted to choose an assessment type. Select Assigned, then click Next.

  4. Select the students you wish to include in or exclude from the assessment.

  5. Choose a due date and time. We recommend you add approximately 15 to 20 minutes to allow students enough time to upload their assignments. For example, if the exam is due at 6:00 PM, adjust the settings so students are able to upload without a penalty until 6:20 PM. Click Next.

  6. Add the assessment question using the "Question content" field and add the point value under "Max. points". You can also add an "Assignment description" (description of the assessment or instructions) to appear beside the questions.

  7. Click Preview above the “Question content" field to ensure the content appears the way you'd like it to.

      8. When you are finished, click Save and go to Dashboard!

      9. Once your assessment has been created, you can share it with your students immediately or use Schedule automatic distribution to select a date/time when you want to release the assessment.

Once an exam has been released, you cannot modify questions or add students. However, you can modify the due date while an assessment is open.

Create an administered assessment

Administered Assessment allows you to create handwritten in-person exams or assignments. Crowdmark generates unique exams for each student with the use of labels and QR codes. After completion, exams are scanned and uploaded into Crowdmark for evaluation and feedback.  You can watch a tutorial on how to create an Administered Assessment in Crowdmark.

There are several steps you need to follow to successfully implement Crodwmark's Administered Assessment tool in your exams.

Before the exam

  1. Create an assessment in Crowdmark and select Administered

  2. Create an assessment template in Word or LaTeX and save as a .pdf. Formatting specifications should be met to ensure the QR codes do not interfere with the exam. A template is available to guarantee  the spacing criteria is correct.

  3. Upload the template (.pdf) and preview to check if the formatting is correct and all elements of the exam are visible (not covered by a label or QR code).

  4. Define the location of each question throughout the .pdf, maximum points per question, and a label (optional).

  5. Click Generate PDF to create an individual an unique exam for each student in your course. You can generate extra assessments as a precaution, you will not be able to generate extra booklets later on. Apart from open questions, you can use multiple choice questions in an administered assessment.

  6. Click Download PDF to obtain one single .pdf including all the booklets for the students enrolled in your course.

  7. Send the .pdf file to the Exams Office to print the booklets for your exam.
